Education
response to Anne Trubek's post Stop Teaching Handwriting
I do concur with your displeasure at the state requirement for handwriting skills. I remember taking handwriting as well and hated that it actually affected my gpa (yes, I was really concerned about maintaining my gpa in the 3rd grade). No child should be subjected to that for a grade, especially if the child may have a problem writing- my boyfriend must've experienced the same thing, for he has has trouble handwriting.
Yet, while handwriting shouldn't be graded, handwriting still is an important skill to learn as best as one could. Yeah, children shouldn't need to conform their handwriting to a certain font to be deemed legible or worthy of fulfilling state requirement, but it's such a basic and essential skill nonetheless. Everything cannot simply depend on a computer (or lack of a keyboard, as you're arguing)- we'll just all become too robotic. As other people have commented, students still need to take notes, people still jot down notes to themselves. Handwriting is not obsolete, but it should no longer be a school "subject" that determines a child's movement to a higher level.

Culture
response to Reihan Salam's post A Call for Yuppie Communes
I've heard of furthered developments to promote the cohousing experience, which could essentially stick multiple families together in a single, accommodating house. I think it would be great to better unite humanity, especially in this age of alienisation due to higher work demands for success. Communes of friends and families can all mix together well, and society really could benefit from it. Granted, I have high faith in the possibilities of man, but nonetheless this is a practical idea that should be embraced to benefit all with our growing populations, etc.

Environment
response to ranaazha's post Going the distance: 0.5 inch margins!
I try to do the very same thing regarding school-related print-outs. It was an absolute nightmare when, this past semester, most of my assignments required laborious print-outs. It was absolutely ridiculous how much paper and ink were wasted on these readings! What I'd do is print notes and readings on used paper, and first drafts of papers on used paper. It's a much more economical solution.
And changing the margins would help out as well. Hopefully, that won't encourage professors and teachers to expect more writing of students when it's not necessary. If we can change the standards of margins and page lengths to suit more environmental needs, academic papers would be less hassle, both for student and the environment.

hernando de soto's mystery of capital.
discusses a lot about the potential of the world's "poor."
we should wake up to the functioning of their economic systems and work to integrate them into the grander scheme of things, should they find themselves unable to come together as "Pooristan"
